Product Description

The compact and highly versatile Nikon 16-85mm wide-angle-to-medium telephoto zoom lens is ideal for a broad range of shooting situations, from interiors and landscapes to portraits. The lens is equipped with Nikon's Vibration Reduction technology, which minimizes the effects of camera shake. This allows handheld shooting at up to four shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, producing dramatically sharper images at distance. The lens also offers two extra-low-dispersion (ED) glass elements, which minimize chromatic aberration to produce superior sharpness and color correction, and three aspherical lens elements, which virtually eliminate coma effects and other flaws, even when used at the widest aperture. And photojournalists will love the exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which facilitates accurate, high-speed, ultra-quiet autofocusing.

Other features include a Super Integrated Coating (SIC) that offers superior color performance and reduced ghosting and flare; a closest focusing distance of 1.3 feet throughout the entire zoom range; a rounded seven-blade diaphragm that improves the appearance of out-of-focus image elements; and a one-year warranty.

If I know I'm going to be shooting people, you know, a wedding, bar mitzvah, baptism, birthday party, especially one with children and clowns, then this is the lens I use. If I take two bodies, I'll have a wide angle on the other one, so I can get good group shots inside. The 16-85mm range of the camera translates to 24-127mm in real world photography and that'll give you good wide angle shots and allow you some pretty good closeups from across the room or yard, plus the 80 to 120mm range is perfect for portraits.

This lens isn't all that expensive and you're buying better than excellent optics, Nikon quality (the build on this lens is as good as you'll find on any lens made today) and VR that works (it's almost like going a couple stops lower).

You might wonder why I'd opt for this lens for people shooting events over the very nice Nikon 18-200mm or theTamron 18-270mm, well this lens weighs less, focuses faster, takes sharper photos and I've never ever wished I'd had a longer lens at an event, well once, when I shot a wedding in Huntington Beach. It was a beach side condo and there was some good surf action going on, great waves, but that had nothing to do with the wedding.

I recently returned from a guided tour of the Rockies and had a chance to try this newly acquired lens out under varying conditions. It performed very well and any problems were due to my not understanding some of the features. It is avery advanced piece of equipment and easy to transition from older Nikkor lenses. Besides the focal length, which proved ideal for images of close ups of flowers as well as distant shops of an impressive landscape, I was curious as to how well the VR, vibration reduction feature worked and was surprised as how well it functioned. Even quick snapshots out a bus window were sharp. For me, this is an ideal lens for travel as I never felt the need to use my Nikkor 70-300 mm lens. I had some trouble using the M/A, M switch and am not sure why both settings are necessary. Otherwise I am very happy with the lens which I coupled to a Nikon D-90, also a very nice piece of equipment.

this is the perfect addition to my 55-200 vr. i bought the d70s body with no kit lens so i could put the money towards a nice lens. this really worked out how i wanted! i hear people claiming it doesn't focus fast, but i handed it to a 30 year pro photographer buddy and he is looking into buying one now too, so it can't be too bad. i took it to a club to shoot a friends birthday party. my worries about focusing in the dark went away as i came away with 98% of sharp photos of people dancing in the club. i used a sb800 to light it with 1.6 sec shutterspeed both front and rear curtain, iso 200, and the lens did awesome! it found people even when i sometimes couldn't. the vr even has a second stage for while shooting from a moving car called active vr. i would definitely recommend this to a pro photographer! may not be as fast as the big guns, but it's not kicking rocks either.
